***QA Speaking Schedule***
Under IIA Standards, an external assessment must be performed at least once every five years by a qualified, independent reviewer or review team from outside the organization. For organizations adhering to Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS), each audit organization performing audits or attestation engagements in accordance with GAGAS must have an external peer review at least once every three years.
Why are the IIA Standards receiving attention right now? The compliance deadline for the 2002 Standards revision was January 1, 2007. Companies in all industries from small internal audit departments up to the world’s largest organizations proactively went through the mandatory QAR process during 2005 and 2006 in order to be compliant before December 31, 2006. The five year time period for these organizations has either passed or will lapse by January 1, 2012. Organizations with an internal audit activity that do not meet this reoccurring five year requirement will be non-compliant with the IIA’s Standards.
